Q # 1. What is this FAQ doing here and why?
Sometimes we find questioning ourselves the very wisdom for having this Mailing List FAQ – only a very few really bother to read these before they rush to post. But, anyway here they are – if you are already a member of some list, you will probably know by now, most of the dos’ and don’ts’. In case you don’t, you sure will after you have gone through this FAQ.
Q # 2. What is the list for?
The list was started by me on 13th January, 1999, to provide a forum for the Linux users in Calcutta to interact. And thats exactly what it does. So, do not feel puzzled if we sometimes deviate from Linux and things related to it, to something unrelated – its just our way of socializing. Although sometimes, we also use it for making announcements of meetings/seminars/any other events in which ILUG-Cal is involved. Eye-wink
Q # 3. What this list is *not* for?
A. An absolute no-no on discussions related to cracking techniques applied on or about security loopholes of certain ISPs known to us. However, network security is a valid topic for discussion — only refrain from using “oh….its so easy to do this with them” sort of phrases. Hacking is welcome, cracking is not.
B. Use of the addresses of the members for any kind of bulk-mailing for purposes which do not feature among the primary functions of the list. (any abuse of this nature will result in the access rights being removed)
C. Use of the list for the sole purpose of soliciting business. It has been decided that the name of ILUG-Cal may not be used by the members (or any others) to solicit business. The members are free to solicit business on their own, representing themselves or their firms, without associating ILUG-Cal in any negotiation, on any brochures or any other form of business correspondence or advertisement. An exception to this rule may be made when (at least a part of) the profits/proceeds from the contract/sale/consultancy are to be donated to ILUG-Cal for the purpose of funding its activities. (Such an exception may be made only with unanimous support from the members).
Q # 4. Who can subscribe?
Anyone from in and around Calcutta – someone who already uses Linux, plans to do so, or simply interested to know what “this Linux” is all about. (We have members from at least 4 different districts, 2 different states and 3 different countries, so we really don’t mind people joining in from outside Calcutta).
Q # 5. Is this a moderated list?
Not really, not at least in the strict sense of the word. However, there are certain guidelines (mentioned in this FAQ) which the members are expected to follow.
Q # 6. I’m not a subscriber but I want to post to the list…how?
Sorry! The list policy allows only members to post (although anyone can read the posts off the web). However, if your post was polite enough or important enough, the moderator may choose to accept your post….but he reserves the right to reject it without any clarification.
Q # 7. I’m not receiving any posts for a number of days….is anybody out out there??
Two possiblities here :-
A. People have been too busy or too lazy to post anything during those “number of days” Smiling
B. Your mail server must have been down or over-loaded, as a result the posts being delivered to you were returned back to the list server, as a result your address had been set to “bouncing”. When an address “bounces”, the list server doesn’t send you any mail, until the status is reset by the moderator or manager of the group. (This problem is particular prevalent among subscribers with hotmail.com accounts).
So if you notice, that you are not receiving any mail, you can mail me, stating your condition. I or someone else will look into it.
Q # 8. What are the posting policies of this list?
A. Please refrain from unnecessary qouting of mails being replied to…please understand that some of the members are sitting on slow pipes, and sometimes they are limited only to email services.
B. Try not to send HTML mails to the list….phpain text mails preferred any day.
C. No ambigous “Me too” posts
D. If you are posting something off-topic to the list, make sure that you prefix the subject line of your mail with “OFF-TOPIC” or “OT”.
E. Try to ensure that the mail you send to the list is only from the address you subscribed from, otherwise the mail has to be approved by the moderator, before they can be posted onto the list.
[NOTE: The present ListAdmin usually doesn’t mind this additional workload and will “ok” the mail. But if you happen to catch him on a bad-bad day, just remember that BOFH happens to be his fav sysadmin character….Eye-wink ]
Q # 9. Does this Mailing list support a digest mode?
The plans are there to set this up, but not today.
Q # 10. I don’t want to receive the daily mails …what do I do?
As of now there is no provision for a “Vacation” mode for this list, maybe some day it will be there….but no promises though Smiling
Q # 11. My question isn’t listed here, what do I do?
Probably your question isn’t a [F]requently [A]sked [Q]uestion *grin*….No, we appreciate that the above may not answer your queries. In that case, send an e-mail to email@example.com, clearly stating your question. Who knows – if its good enough, it might just be included in the FAQ Smiling
