A CyberCafe UseCase
From IlugCal
This page intends to capture what a CyberCafe does ie an UseCase. The fallout should be a feasibility of doing a CyberCafe using FOSS tools. Without much ado, here's the list:
- Surfing using a browser
- Webmail using a browser
- e-Commerce transaction using a browser
- IM using text
- IM with audio and video
- Word Processing
- CD-Burning/Copying
- Scanning
- Printing
- DTP
- Games
Infrastructure required to set up a FOSS CyberCafe (unless one plans to do a "stateless" cybercafe)
- Hardware
* <put_in_data>
- Software
* Proxy Server * Usage Monitoring Software for billing * Monitoring Software
How does a FOSS Stack stack up for a cybercafe ?
- Surfing using Firefox
- Webmail using Firefox
- e-Commerce transaction using Firefox
- Gaim for text IM
- Word Processing with OpenOffice.org or KOffice or AbiWord or .... (note that there are Indic issues)
- CD-Burning/Copying using K3B on KDE, Brasero on Gnome Desktop
- Scanning - the software is available what is a cause for concern is the availability of scanner drivers/backends
- Printing - almost works (TM) but still limited to availability of drivers/backends
- DTP - No suitable tool yet. Scribus exists but is an intense resouce-hog and has issues with Indic Printing.
